The Executive of the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation is inviting applications for appointment of a Federation member on the Board of Directors of the Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board (SPTRB). Successful Board of Director appointees will be eligible for reappointment for a three-year term.
The Board of Directors plays a vital role in the governance of the SPTRB. The purpose of the SPTRB is to establish and administer the professional certification and standards of professional conduct and competence of teachers for the purposes of serving and protecting the public.
Board of Director member responsibilities, as outlined by The Registered Teachers Act, include:
- Electing a chairperson of the Board of Directors.
- Meeting at least once in each year.
- Establishing administrative and regulatory bylaws governing the Regulatory Board’s practices and procedures.
- Appointing a chief operating officer and registrar.
- Establishing a five-person professional conduct committee and a five-person discipline committee.
- Overseeing the issuance of teacher’s certificates, registration of teachers and maintenance of a public register, and disciplinary functions for misconduct or incompetence.
Federation appointees shall act in good faith and in the public interest, and shall conduct themselves with the duty of care and due diligence expected as trustees of the Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board and regulators of the teaching profession. Once appointed, a Federation appointee is not permitted to hold any other appointed or elected office of the Federation or serve as a representative of any local association during the period of their appointment to the Board of Directors.
Successful candidates must have the necessary experience, character, commitment to serve and protect the public, demonstrated leadership skills, a commitment to lifelong learning, strong communication skills and a strong sense of ethics. Diversity of career stage, gender, cultural heritage and geographical distribution are also considered within the context of the required skills and attributes.

As referenced in Clause 12.3.2 of the 2019-2023 Provincial Collective Bargaining Agreement, a teacher acting as an elected or appointed member of a committee of the Federation who attends a meeting called by the Federation, shall be granted leave and shall suffer no loss of salary and benefits during the course of an academic year for any days required to fulfil the duties of that office.
The Federation aims to engage as many members as possible in organizational operations. Preference will be given to those who do not currently hold other positions in office, committees or boards; however, members may apply for as many openings as desired.
