Know, Think You Know, Want to Know

Know, Think you know, want to know

Purpose:

Organizing Learning

Additional Purpose(s):

Supporting Thinking

Overview:

This structure supports learners in preparing to engage with content/text and to reflect on what they learned after that engagement.

Procedure:

  1. Provide a topic and prepared chart papers to small groups and have them respond to the prompts, recording what they know, think they know, and what they want to know.
  2. Post the charts and look for patterns and themes.
  3. If groups disagree on the “Know” column, encourage them to place content in the “Think You Know” column.
  4. After engaging with content/text, learners return to their charts to reflect on whether their “think you knows” can be moved to “knows,” whether their “want to knows” have been answered, and whether they have additional “want to knows.”

Materials:

Label chart paper with three columns: Know, Think You Know, and Want to Know OR use the Know, Think You Know, Want to Know Organizer.
